opentelemetry.io This Week: Pekko Docs, OBI v0.15.2, and a Big Localization Week
The opentelemetry.io site is the documentation hub for OpenTelemetry, and this week it moved fast: 126 commits, 367 files changed, about 15.6k insertions. The useful bits for users are new Apache Pekko docs for Java, refreshed OBI documentation for v0.15.2, and a blog post on security hardening. Most of the rest is localization work across three languages.
Apache Pekko is now a documented Java target
If you run Apache Pekko instead of Akka, the Java agent docs now cover it. The Pekko Remote instrumentation page landed on the default branch along with the commit updating the Java docs index. For anyone who migrated off Akka after its license change, this closes a gap: you no longer have to guess whether the agent instruments Pekko Remote actors. Check the zero-code Java pages for the supported modules list before wiring the agent into a Pekko cluster.
OBI documentation refreshed for v0.15.2
OpenTelemetry eBPF Instrumentation (OBI) got its docs brought up to date with the v0.15.2 release. Two pages changed the most:
If you deploy OBI on Kubernetes, reread the setup page. Attribute and naming defaults drift between minor OBI versions, and stale docs were a real source of confusion here. This was a long open PR that finally merged, so the content tracks a released version rather than a preview build.
Security blog post: hardening without breaking the API
The maintainers merged a blog post on strengthening OpenTelemetry security while preserving API stability (#12106), with the matching site commit 0af314e. Worth a read if you run SDKs or Collectors in a shared environment: it explains which security improvements can ship without a breaking spec change. Translated versions are already following; a Japanese translation of the security docs index was merged separately as PR #12233.
Localization week: Japanese, Korean, and Romanian
Roughly half of the merged pull requests were translations. The heaviest work:
- Japanese: nine PRs updating build scripts, telemetry, collector, Spring Boot starter, and declarative configuration pages, for example PR #12111 and PR #12192
- Korean: demo pages localized, including forking and feature flags
- Romanian: signals and instrumentation index pages, including the signals index (#12280) and a new spell check dictionary at
.cspell/ro-words.txt
Romanian appears to be the newest active locale on the site. If your team reads docs in those languages, several previously stale pages now match the English source again.
Housekeeping that keeps the site honest
The most touched file of the week was link-cache.jsonc with 26 commits, from repeated automated link cache refreshes. The community members list at data/community/members.yaml also saw steady bot updates. Two smaller items stand out: the demo architecture diagram got its missing Flagd connections fixed, and a Kubernetes observability blueprint landed in the blueprints section.
What to watch
- The Romanian locale is filling in fast; expect more
[ro]PRs in the coming weeks. - OBI docs will keep moving; the maintainers sync them per release, so check the zero-code OBI pages after each OBI upgrade.
- The locale auto-merge bot behavior changed too: failure replies are now actionable, per PR #12240. Translation contributors will get clearer feedback when their PRs conflict.
